Those who’ve heard of Mexican- American pianist Castro (d. 2009) may associate him with two albums for Atlantic, one of them in the quartet with Teddy Edwards that also recorded under Edwards’ name for Pacific Jazz and Contemporary. Each of the present six CDs covers a different unreleased project, and Teddy is well featured on the last three, covering a quartet set, a big band and a tentet. The last two were professionally taped for the short-lived Clover label (with only a 45rpm single ever issued), while the rest were well documented in private studio sessions financed by Castro’s enormously wealthy wife, Doris Duke. His piano style consists of supercharged bebop with some funky touches (think Hampton Hawes rather than Horace Silver) and he acquits himself well, with the possible exception of the rather boring 1954 session with Hamilton and Collette, consisting of a succession of free-form vamps. There’s a nice bit of Thompson on CD3 (though not as much as advertised, I think), but the more surprising and interesting set has mid-50s Teddy Wilson on piano, leading a trio and backing first Getz and then Zoot Sims. Apparently there’s a lot more where this came from, as documented on www.joecastrojazz.com, but meanwhile this box has some unexpected and previously unknown music.
