When Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison left the John Coltrane quartet, the saxophonist who caught their ear was Chicago-born Joseph Carl Firrantello, better known to jazz audiences as Joe Farrell. The clean-toned, fluent and tough-phrasing Farrell, equally brilliant on flute, was one of the few musicians to match Jones’ invention and drive. Farrell went on to play in the first edition of Chick Corea's Return to Forever and record a series of jazz-rock albums for CTI, but on this highly recommended reissue he returns to straightahead jazz and delivers, in his own words; “Some real honest blowing”. And that's exactly what we get. The set opens with the twisty unison sax and piano theme of the title track, the first of three Farrell originals. The following bossa, ‘Cliché Romance’ belies its title, while the closer, ‘Bara Bara’ is a headlong swinger featuring Chick Corea on electric piano. Corea's single original, ‘High Wire – The Aerialist’ has a samba lilt, and two standards, a feisty ‘Speak Low’ and a lovely reading of ‘You Go to My Head’ round out the set. Both Farrell and Corea are on top form, inspired by drummer Laurence Marable's strong pulse and supportive chatter. My only carp is that bassist Bob Magnusson is too busy to really let the groove sit in the pocket. Not that Farrell seems that fussed. He plays his socks off, reminding us of what jazz lost when he died of MDS in 1986.
