Hot on the heels of Proper's The Joe Harriott Story, comes this very welcome reissue and a first for both these albums on CD. The sound is immaculate, preserving both the warm ambience of the original vinyl while also allowing for the brighter tones of compact disc. But the music is, of course, the most important thing. Had it not been for Harriott's groundbreaking records – Movement, Free Form and Abstract – High Spirits would be more highly regarded by his fans. It is, after all, beautifully played and arranged and any opportunity to hear Harriott and Keane on such fine form is as ever a joy. But most people will buy this for Movement. More than its predecessors, this album gives a picture of a typical Harriott quintet performance mixing free and bebop-derived material. It is best summed up by its final three tracks: the free ‘Spaces’, more mainstream ‘Spiritual Blues’, and the intense title track itself. More than the form or approach it is the sheer commitment and passion of the music that persists and one can hear in a few brief moments, Harriott and his confrères in all their wondrous glory.
