Though the main pillars of the late Joe Henderson's back catalogue are easy to access, this highly recommended MPS quartet release is something of a rarity. Henderson is in great form, playing with equals and spinning melodies with superb timing and a peppery tone. Each solo is fresh-minted, but hangs together as tightly as a written composition, and Chick Corea's improvisations are not far behind. To round things out, Billy Higgins whips up the pulse with insistent cymbals and a taut snare that is completely at one with Ron Carter's bass lines, thrums and slurs. The set is bookended by a brace of Corea originals, the title track, a well-constructed waltz and the tricky, up-tempo, much altered ‘Blues For Liebestraum’. The aptly titled ‘Candlelight’ is a beautiful ballad with composer Ron Carter giving full measure, Henderson delivers a mid-tempo masterclass on ‘What's New’ and builds an epic construction on the blues with ‘Keystone’. The sole Henderson original, ‘Joe's Bolero’ is a must-hear modal highlight of controlled phonics, alternative fingering and alternative harmonic pathways. When Joe Henderson died in 2001, his status in jazz saxophone lineage was assured. This album, recorded when Henderson was out of the public eye, proves his consistency, and is a worthy addition to a discography already bulging with seminal recordings.
