It's to the Duke's everlasting credit that his music transcends whatever re-imaginings other artist's bring to it. Joe Jackson obviously has a ball re-pitching Ellington's material in a rich range of environments, none of which purists would call ‘jazz’ (whatever that is). But give in to the delirium (and keep your sense of humour) and The Duke has pearls aplenty: Jamie Cullum could have done Jackson's quirky ‘I'm Beginning To See The Light’ which features Carter's joyous fiddle, but it's ‘Caravan’ that steals the show: if you've stayed with its theme lashed out on distorted guitar, and the Joe Meek style keys break, then your pay-off is Deyhim's lustrous voice easing out the lyrics in Farsi: daft but delicious, as indeed is McBride's bowed bass break on the dirge-blues delivery of ‘Mood Indigo’. By the time you've eased through Steve Vai's dreamy deconstruction of ‘Isfahan’, well, Iggy Pop squeaking through ‘It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)’ is, just, well, so dull darling. File under, um, unique.
