Sometimes too much is, well, just a little too much. East Coast veteran Joe Morris has made a name for himself as a highly-regarded double bassist, but he still regularly returns to his first instrument, the electric guitar. Moreover, in situations like the trio Slobber Pup – with keyboardist Jamie Saft and drummer Balazs Pandi – he's shown an irrepressibly recurring penchant for the all-out, ball-busting, high volume shred. This trio with electric bassist Chris Cretella and drummer Dave Parmlee operates in similar territory – but while Slobber Pup's noisy barrages still manage to retain some sense of being group improvisations, here Morris et al give themselves over to brutal jams with little give or take. Morris's axe is wedged firmly in the red, locked in eternal overdrive; Cretella's bass roams around in search of a hook that just won't reveal itself; while Parmelee's drums stumble and pound like a corpulent drunk. It's punishing, exhausting and curiously unsatisfying.
