Guitarist, Guggenheim fellow, film composer, educator, producer, multi-award winner and founder and director of the Alternative Guitar Summit - Joel Harrison may not be a familiar name to many UK music fans, but his impressive and eclectic CV suggests that he should be.
This is his first foray into the time-honoured Hammond-guitar-tenor format, made all the more memorable by the addition of the legendary Jack DeJohnette on drums. Jack makes his presence felt right from the outset with a swaggering backbeat on the title track, which has something of the Scofield about it. Harrison has more of an obvious pop sensibility than Sco - his catalogue includes reworkings of the country repertoire and the compositions of George Harrison - but he’s a versatile and subtle composer, able to deliver on the uptempo post-bop swing of ‘Today Is Tomorrow’s Yesterday’ and the balladry of ‘Migratory Birds’ as convincingly as the space funk of ‘Mohawk Valley Peace Dance’. Greg Tardy provides a satisfyingly hip and fluent foil to the leader’s stinging solo work, that should appeal to fans of Bill Frisell: Gary Versace fills in efficiently on organ and piano. The cover of Dylan’s ‘The Times They Are A Changin’ may veer rather closer to smooth jazz than some listeners might be comfortable with, but there’s a mighty DeJohnette solo on ‘Parvati’ to act as counterweight.
