The jazz piano wünderkind Joey Alexander is a protégé of Wynton Marsalis and has been feted by Herbie Hancock. On this second release, the Indonesian wears his influences on his sleeve and confirms his grasp of jazz roots and essentials. Opening track ‘City Lights’ switches from latin vamp to swing with the energy of Monty Alexander – namesake, but no relation – while the gospel chords that set up ‘Sunday Waltz’ conjure the work of Gene Harris. And a dreamy reworking of ‘Maiden Voyage’ captures Hancock's suspended voicings as well as featuring Chris Potter's thoughtful soprano sax. Alexander pulls these disparate influences into coherence with a personal touch and a pretty mean set of chops. The title track opens with an a capella flourish then romps over thickets of Coltrane-penned harmonies, ‘Criss Cross’ hints at Monk's angularity and there a mambo flavour to the moody reading of ‘Chelsea Bridge’. Support from bassists Larry Grenadier and Dan Chmielinski is tasteful and drummer Ulysses Owen Junior is unobtrusive and in the pocket, making Alexander the dominant voice. Nice album in the accessible piano-trio mainstream with a rhapsodic reading of Wynton Marsalis' ‘For Wee Folks’ the standout track. Somewhat appropriate for a bandleader aged only 13.
