Joey DeFrancesco first emerged on to the scene as a ‘Hammond organ prodigy’ – he was invited to join Miles Davis’s touring band when he was just 17 – but long ago established himself as a jazzer of many and varied talents: he learned the trumpet after his time with Miles, plays piano and also sings. He reveals a fresh instrumental accomplishment on his new trio disc: in addition to crooning Mario Romano’s ‘And If You Please’, he delivers a heartfelt solo using his grandfather’s 1925 tenor saxophone.
It was partly the experience of working with Pharoah Sanders on In the Key of the Universe a few years ago that drew him back to the instrument he first essayed a quarter of a century ago. He is paired with another organist, Lucas Brown, on More Music. The likewise multi-talented Brown does service on the organ when DeFrancesco is busy blowing his trumpet on the pacy opener, ‘Free’, or is occupied with tenor duties on the lovely soulful ‘Angel Calling’, but then Brown picks up his six-string for the intricate organ-guitar interplay of ‘Roll With It’. The snaky, ear-catching ‘Where to Go’ finds the pair exchanging organ solos, supported by the imaginative and energetic drumming of Michael Ode.
