Butcher and Sanders are old hands on the UK Improv scene but, till now, their only recorded collaboration has been a 25-minute set on the 2009 Treader Duos compilation. This new release addresses that situation with 55 minutes of intense duo explorations recorded live at London's Freedom of the City Festival, and a later gig in Southampton. As you'd expect from such renowned improvisers, the quality of playing is staggering. Moreover, it seems to offer a very satisfying rapprochement of Apollonian and Dionysian impulses. On the one hand, it's a dazzling showcase of tightly controlled extended technique: Butcher deals in all the scalpel-sharp trills, flutters and drones we've come to associate him with; and Sanders moves from rapid tabla-like pitter-patter to ringing cymbal tones to rumbling mallet work with hardly a pause. But, at the same time, it never feels like an academic exercise: the pieces flow and grow organically and the final piece, ‘Glowstick’ even skirts close to fire music braggadocio.
