The Jazz Images label’s Francis Wolff Series recycles pictures, often previously unseen, taken by the legendary co-owner of Blue Note and, as here, sometimes applies them to sessions done for other labels such as Prestige. This less celebrated set – done just days away from Coltrane’s participation in the Milestones album and incidentally a couple of months before Jimmy Cobb replaced Philly Joe in Miles’s band – has very presentable playing from all involved on what’s a typical Prestige blowing session. And it has the unique feature of a three-minute standard ballad done as a duo by Trane and Burrell. Of course, anyone expecting a facsimile of the original vinyl packaging will be disappointed, if only because it was first issued (not until 1963) as Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane, rather than the reverse. Also the additional track (a very uptempo ‘Russian Lullaby’ without Burrell) is lifted from the previous month’s Soultrane album, to bump up the running-time. Soundwise, the imprimatur of Rudy Van Gelder means that, for all the efforts of the technicians, this is hardly distinguishable from CD reissues.
