John Coltrane and Kenny Burrell's association on the bandstand goes back to their time with the Dizzy Gillespie band in 1951 where they recorded just three numbers which contain solos so brief they do not warrant inclusion here. They came together again on four albums made between 1956 and 1958, which are all included on this 2CD set – Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane (Prestige/New Jazz) where they appear as co-leaders; Paul Chambers' Whims of Chambers (Blue Note), Tommy Flanagan's The Cats (Prestige/New Jazz) and Interplay for 2 Trumpets and 2 Tenors (Prestige). Among the highlights are a Coltrane/Burrell duo on ‘Why Was I Born?’, worth the price of the album, most of the Tommy Flanagan The Cats session, especially the fine 12-bar blues ‘Tommy's Time’ and the Paul Chambers Blue Note session (now highly collectable on vinyl) that owes much to Horace Silver and Philly Joe Jones combining on some meaty grooves with Chambers.
