One year on from the international success of Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album comes another ‘lost album, this from a year later – 1964 – that in many ways is a much richer offering than last year's release. The music was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio specifically for the soundtrack of French-Canadian director Gilles Grouix’ film Le Chat Dans Le Sac (The Cat In The Bag) and was apparently hidden in plain sight until now. Only some 10 minutes of the recording were actually used on the soundtrack, which can easily be tracked down on the internet courtesy of the National Film Board of Canada. Locating it is an exercise well worth doing, simply to see how well Coltrane's music functioned in providing an aural correlation to the on-screen action – most notably with an exquisite version of ‘Naima’ and a powerful ‘Village Blues’. The album itself consists of three takes of Village Blues', two of ‘Naima’ and one apiece of ‘Like Sonny’ and ‘Traneing In’. It's fascinating to compare these new versions to the previously recorded material. The enormous artistic growth Coltrane had undergone since, for example, his original Atlantic recording of ‘Naima in May 1959, becomes clear. Equally, by 1963, the Classic Quartet itself had matured and grown together, such as on the title-track ‘Blue World’ (which appears in the final scenes of Le Chat and is a contrafact of ‘Out of This World’) that almost engulfs the listener with the relentlessness of Elvin Jones' shimmering waltz rhythms. Here Coltrane sounds majestic, posing the question of whether this album (rather than A Love Supreme recorded a few months later) was the apotheosis of his ‘middle period’.
