More live Coltrane – yawn! Sorry, that's sacrilege, I know. And, in any case, it turns out that it's not more, it's just the “50th anniversary edition” (anniversary of his death, that is, so goodness knows what could suffice for his birth centenary in 2026, apart from a Second Coming). This follow-up to last month's European Tour 1961 has all been out before, and some of it reviewed quite recently, such as the three CDs worth from Stockholm concerts (see Jazzwise 209), though the running order seems to have been amended. The other venues are Paris, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Graz and Milan, with everything previously issued publicly from this tour being included and some speed correction taking place. The meticulous discography and the less expansive essay are all uncredited, but someone has decided to start off with the best sound (the Paris tracks issued by tour producer Norman Granz on Pablo) and progress gradually to the least acceptable (the obscure Milan bootleg). What's noticeable is Coltrane's attempt to be a bit more listener-friendly than in 1961, beginning each concert with ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’ as well as using melodic heads from his recent recordings, and even including a one-off performance of ‘Autumn Leaves’. But the method and the manner are definitely 1962.
