Coltrane's winter 1962 tour has yielded a large trove of classic material – 17 November, Paris (Pablo); 19 November, Stockholm (Domino Jazz); 20 November, Helsinki (Finnish bootleg LP); 22 November, Copenhagen (Domino Jazz); 2 December, Milan (Rare Live Recording – but beware awful sound on this one); and, on a series of Pablo releases, various tracks culled from this tour which appeared on Afro Blue Impressions, The Paris Concert, Bye Bye Blackbird (Norman Granz, who promoted this tour and recorded several concerts, regarded the two tracks on this album as Coltrane's ‘greatest concert performance’) and The European Tour. This, a double CD set of the Graz concert from 26 November includes the whole concert in its entirety. It had previously appeared – so the liner notes say — about a decade ago on a long deleted CD, but passed me by first time around. On offer are extended versions of Coltrane originals ‘Mr. PC’ and ‘Impressions,’ standards that Coltrane made his own: ‘The Inchworm’, ‘Every Time I Say Goodbye’, ‘I Want to Know About You’ and Coltrane's hit/signature tune ‘My Favorite Things’. Interestingly, this collection includes Coltrane's only known version (so far) of the ballad ‘Autumn Leaves’. That's one reason for getting this performance, another, more compelling reason is the group seemed on fire on this date, much like the head of steam they worked up on Bye Bye Blackbird. There's an energy here, which is one of those indefinable things that makes jazz so special. There is a bit of sound wobble on ‘Impressions’, but this in no way detracts from the intensity of the performance.
