Coltrane’s three 1956 sessions under the leadership of Chambers aren’t absolutely essential (Chambers’ Music, High Step and Whims of Chambers, the last complete here even though the front-line lay out on two tracks). They benefit enormously from not only Paul but Philly Joe, and these two are constants on the bonus material too, which consists of the title-track of Rollins’s Tenor Madness (with him and Trane soloing and swapping fours) and the entire album Informal Jazz (which has equally absorbing exchanges between Trane and Mobley). Compared to this intelligent compilation, the Copenhagen programme has been out before on Magnetic, with not only a Norman Granz introduction but Coltrane himself speaking to the audience(!). The other rarity is Trane playing the Clifford Brown-Max Roach favourite ‘Delilah’ (on soprano, with Dolphy soloing on bass-clarinet) while the rest of the programme is as expected for this tour. On ‘Favorite Things’ Dolphy’s flute is sharp, as usual, while Coltrane seems especially inventive in its extended coda. Having seen this band just days earlier, I’m grateful for any reminders of the experience and I hope to recover soon.
