This well-organised look at the middle decade of Coltrane's career takes its title from the fact that he would have turned 90 last September, and is clearly intended for those who haven't obsessively collected every single recorded note of his but would like to know more about how his work career hangs together. As such, it doesn't cover the last five years of his life as documented by Impulse!, presumably for copyright as well as stylistic reasons, but it does manage to include the original lengthy versions of ‘Africa’ and ‘Chasin’ The Trane’. Most of the contents are Prestige and Atlantic studio recordings, beginning with the famous Davis quintet, but the final CD of live tracks, as well as more with Miles, has early tracks as a member of the Gillespie and Hodges bands, plus a European ‘Impressions’ and possibly the first documented public outing for ‘My Favorite Things’. It would be possible to go at length about Coltrane's fascinating development over this period but, for those who don't already have all the relevant sessions, it's recommended to dive in and find out for yourself.
