Ah, such sweet surprises from an Etheridge project dedicated to the timeless magic of Stephane Grappelli. As Etheridge points out, Sweet Chorus is not a Hot Club tribute band, but celebrates Grappelli the ever generous soul who enjoyed making music in whatever context he found himself. So, though there are naturally a range of Reinhardt/Grappelli songs, notably ‘Swing Guitars’ and ‘Chanson de Rue’, there are also witty revisionings of other guitarists, like Johnny Smith's ‘Jaguar’ done with the biggest of grins, or Charlie Christian's ‘Seven Come Eleven’ with a nod to Pass and Herb Ellis, plus a couple of Etheridge's own tunes, like the winsome balladry of ‘I Saw You Passing By’. But it's Garrick who deserves the plaudits, at once profoundly influenced by Grappelli, yet cannily his own man as on ‘There's a Small Hotel’. Crowdy and Creese keep it bubbling along without sticking their elbows in your ribs. The only gripe: why stick at Twenty?
