It's said that the French horn is frequently used in orchestral music to both soothe or lift the spirits – to herald some regal of biblical event. Be that as it may, back in the day, the incorporation of a French horn into jazz (along with a tuba) was viewed, not as a solo voice but as an addition to a much larger brass section, to bulk out the impact as can be heard by the truth that Claude Thornhill, Stan Kenton, Shorty Rogers and the Miles Davis Nonet put the French horn to practical use by enhancing the overall sound of their ensembles. As a solo instrument it didn't quite cut it, to where only John Graas, Julius Watkins, Dave Amram and Gunther Schuller are probably the most well-known practitioners. This compilation is a weird one, comprising two lesser-known Graas solo albums (Jazzmantics and Coup De Graas) and padded out with 14 much-reissued Shorty Rogers classics from his original Giants period that take in familiar originals including ‘Popo’, ‘Diablo's Dance’, ‘Powder Puff’ and ‘Mambo Del Crow’. Graas and Pepper were once both sidemen with Kenton, but this very loose connection isn't one to be overly concerned with.
