It was when critic Ralph Gleason heard the first lineup here, with White, Hahn, Thompson and Clarke, in a Bay Area club that he persuaded Jimmy Lyons to give them a concert at Monterey, even though the band had never recorded.
The resulting LP of their concert had just one lengthy track on each side, the reflective ‘If Only We Knew’ on one and the catchy, iconic ‘Spanish Lady’ on the other. Even Handy regarded the latter as “kind of a cult recording’, and from his languorous solo intro to the terpsichorean whirl of the main theme, leading to the subsequent barrage of energetic soloing, it lives up to that billing. Hahn’s stabbing chords, Clarke’s powerful drumming and Thompson’s always accurate bass propel the band forward in a masterclass of how to wow a festival crowd, and listening now we are immediately drawn into September sunshine of Monterey. White is one of the finer jazz violinists, his nimble post-bop lines mingling with double stopped chords and patterns, and his timbre contrasts well with that of the alto.
For this release, another lengthy Handy side from a night at the Village Vanguard is a welcome bonus. He blends with Hutcherson as effectively as he does with White, with the added bonus of some fine playing from guitarist Pat Martino on the top form of the first era of his career.
