This set of all-new John Scofield originals celebrates the Grammygathering guitarist's 66th birthday – but if his senior citizenship inclines him to a little nostalgia about his early jazz origins here, there isn't a hint of coasting or complacency. Long-time Scofield drummer Bill Stewart injects his usual alertness and uncluttered drive, Robert Glasper bassist Vicente Archer is variously direct and devious, and the band acquires a gracefully swinging modern-traditionalist in keyboardist Gerald Clayton. ‘Can't Dance’, a typically coaxing, lyrical and understated Scofield groover launches the set, with the leader's almost Charlie Christian-like tone and improv shapeliness complemented by Clayton's affably swaggering organ break. A collective light touch frees up quite conventional swingers like the almost-smooth ‘Combo Theme’ and the uptempo ‘At The Fair’, ‘Willa Jean’ is a lovely country song sketched in loose, skiddy guitar figures, ‘Dang Swing’ is a long-lined jazz blues full of canny stop-time banter for Scofield and Clayton. The band powerfully flexes its improv muscles on the lyrically waltzing, but increasingly earthy and urgent, ‘New Waltzo’ (some of the leader's fast bop-lines on this set are as seamlessly fluid as any in his long career), and ‘I'm Sleeping In’ joins a long line of classically subtle Scofield ballads. Despite the 66-yearold's affectionate glances back to mainstream swing on Combo 66, an unmistakeable sense of just how much Scofield and his partners are enjoying themselves permeates everything.
