It's no surprise that Sco thanks Miles ‘for everything’ on Electric Outlet. Sco's work on Decoy and You're Under Arrest won him a worldwide audience. Ironically, Outlet is a stuttering date for the guitarist as a leader, with its leanings to a sophisticated pop-rock and Sanborn flapping about fruitlessly. Scofield had paid his dues, though, before Miles and it's interesting to ponder on the earlier influence of Konitz and Mingus, the melodic and muscular, on the guitar man. Certainly by Still Warm, Scofield's mentor (and that album's producer) Steve Swallow has pulled it back together. With fellow Miles colleagues Hakim and Jones alongside, the sound is tight, the funk and virtuosity not overplayed and that unique Sco sound to the fore. The mix of blues, scratchy rhythms, that keening tone, a lithe fluency and yearning toward a killer riff all bubble up, through the rough joys of ‘High And Mighty’, the sly funk of ‘Gil B643’ and the urgent wit of ‘Picks and Pans’. Still warm, after all these years.
