Drummer Johnathan Blake mostly delivers his polyrhythmic thrust in other people's bands – his current schedule includes Kenny Barron, Ravi Coltrane and the Danilo Pérez-led group P.C.P. Here he combines eloquently with bassist Linda May Han Oh and tenor saxophonist Chris Potter on a rare own-name release that combines thrilling virtuosity and an architectural sense of form. Blake recorded this 2CD set at NYC's Jazz Gallery thanks to the not-for-profit Giant Steps Arts label. Both albums begin with short, understated drum solos, and the recording captures Blake's pings, rolls and chatters in pristine sound. But it is Potter introducing The Police's ‘Synchronicity 1’ with an abstract wash that sets up the full force of this power trio's energy and bite. The saxophonist's arrangement takes 17 minutes to unfold, and not a second seems out of place. Though Blake is the leader, the album has a strong collective vibe. Composing rights are equally spread, solos are long, and each musician showcases their virtuosity in full. Potter's syncopated articulation and speed of light runs are a force of nature, and here they are matched by Blake's and Oh's cross-stitch patterns and power. Most impressive, though, is the mutual support that cuts out excess and lets creativity thrive Tracks vary from Oh's counterpoint-fuelled ‘Trope’ to Blake's driving ‘No Bebop Daddy’, Potter's ‘Eagle’ is elegiac and there is a textbook cover of Charlie Parker's ‘Relaxing at Camarillo’. The themes are pitch-perfect, but solos are the main event, along with their uplifting support.
