As illustrated by recent archival albums from Bud Powell (reviewed in Jazzwise 269 and 271), SteepleChase had sufficient free time during the height of the pandemic to discover some previously unreleased material already in its possession. This Copenhagen concert derives from a short European tour undertaken by six Ellingtonians (plus pianist Williams), who also had free time while the maestro was otherwise occupied with creating music for the movie Paris Blues. Hodges, who first fronted Ducal small-groups on record from 1937 and then toured his own group during 1951-55, is very much in charge, with all his favourite vehicles included in these 20 tracks. Nance, Brown and Carney are given a couple of features each (the last-named with his famous extended ending on ‘Sophisticated Lady’) and also contribute considerably to some of the blowing numbers such as ‘Perdido’. The only surprise is the encore, ‘Autumn Leaves’, featuring Nance's violin with no Hodges, but elsewhere the leader's varied solos – even when they're note-for-note recreations of earlier versions – are still a source of wonder.
