Now 81-years-old, Jon Hassell's quirkily trance-like and ethereal musical collages have always been ahead of their time; so much music still hasn't caught up with him. Spanning a multitude of genres, his background in avant-garde minimalism and classical – studying under Stockhausen – led to an inimitable sound that filtered high-art concepts through jazz, electronica and global roots music. His untrumpetlike trumpet is perhaps his biggest link to the jazz tradition and no doubt has had its influence on the 1990s Nordic fusion of eastern sound sources and jazztronica, the foremost heirs being Nils Petter Molvær and Arve Henriksen. Hassell's first new album for nine years is released on his new label Ndeya and it might have been worth the wait. Electronica is intricately woven with global/contemporary beats and Hassell's occasional effects-filtered trumpet creating sound sculptures that are both cohesive and hypnotic. A kind of musical alchemy is at work here, making for a seductive avant-lounge classic.
