This debut album from bassist, composer, and bandleader Jonny Wickham is an exquisite tribute to Afro-Brazilian rhythmic traditions.

The first notes of the enchanting opener ‘Mono No Aware’ transport you to a mesmerising sound-world, its free time intro subtly weaving together layers of handpan, guitar, piano and a tapestry of percussion, before gradually converging on a gorgeous melodic line played by soprano sax and guitar, later embraced by the crystalline vocals of Irini Arabatzi, who is a key presence throughout. ‘Neon Muse’ reveals another facet of Wickham's artistry, a magnificent ballad enriched by the poignant lyrics of Yasmin Nabavi and the heartfelt contributions of Tom Barford on tenor.

The magnificent ‘Space and Time’ showcases the intricate interplay of Maculele, Ijexá, and Maracatu rhythms and presents one of this year's most memorable earworms through Arabatzi and guitarist Greg Sanders' mesmerising unison melody. The effervescent title track, featuring music by Wickham and Portuguese lyrics penned by London-based singer-songwriter Inês Loubet, exudes an irresistible energy propelled by vibrant samba influences. From delicate, whispering timbres to potent improv, Terra Boa spans a wide spectrum of sonic exploration, brought to life by a brilliant ensemble. An album of great musical depth and meticulous craftsmanship.
