After the somewhat inconsistent While You Were Sleeping, this is a definite return to winning ways for vocalist James. As he showed on For All We Know, the well-weighted 2010 duet recording with pianist Jef Neve, he can be particularly effective in ballad mode, and this exploration of the Lady Day songbook provides a suitable vehicle for that side of his personality. James' poise, his leisurely way with the pulse of an arrangement and control over his sotto voice have always been strong, but the deep pathos of anthems such as ‘Good Morning Heartache’, ‘Lover Man’ and ‘God Bless The Child’ has ushered him towards a higher level of tonal finesse as well as emotional investment. While the vocalist is in good form, mention must also be made of the very effective backing of the trio led by Jason Moran, who, all the while playing with great sensitivity, nonetheless slides in some of his customary bluesy grit. The album ends with a suitably haunting rendition of ‘Strange Fruit’ which James recasts as an a capella built on a rhythmic bed of low gospel moans, hushed affirmations and crisp, chain-like handclaps. He unleashes the full power of his baritone and the contrast with the preceding material couldn't be greater. In this Holiday centennial, James pays a fitting tribute to Billie's leonine spirit.
