This follow-up to his terrific 2011 debut, Possibilities, sees Australian vocalist Josh Kyle back on home soil following an extended period in the UK. As its title suggests, the seven track collection features Kyle's inspired reworkings of tunes by some of Australia's leading jazz instrumentalists, with the singer appending new original lyrics. Kyle is joined on the album by the impressive pianist Sam Keevers, an erstwhile member of the Vince Jones band from 1996 to 1999 and an artist who Kyle has followed closely for many years. Composed by Keevers, album opener ‘Simple Pleasures’ is based around a ridiculously catchy, syncopated two-bar vamp, slightly reminiscent of Chick Corea's Children's Songs, over which Kyle's melodic line floats benignly. As on the debut, the singer's falsetto is used to enormously powerful effect here. A beautiful triptych of songs by the Sydney-based sax player Sean Coffin includes the irrepressibly grooving ‘All The Reasons’, the sumptuous harmonies of ‘Cutez’ and the slinky bass line of ‘Breathe’. The sorrowing ostinato of ‘Ballad Of the Cranes’, another tune by Keevers, draws out a captivating performance from the singer, full of insight and tonal warmth. Penned by the Paris-based pianist Daniel Gassin, ‘Crossover’ features an unaccompanied prelude by the singer, which makes you appreciate anew his technical command and flawless intonation. The duo round off this impeccable date with a spellbinding take on vocalist Kristin Berardi's ‘One Moment, Please’.
