With his career seemingly preordained by his name, Jaswon is a young alto saxophonist of rare thoughtfulness and poise. On casual listening, you might think he was playing tenor: his superb breath control allows him to roll out long, even lines that sit on the coat-tails of the groove; and he makes all the right choices about when to turn up the heat and when to stay cool. This debut album is an admirably focused affair, comprising half-a-dozen original compositions that range from the hard-hitting opener ‘Crouching Tiger’ (which comes out of a 1960s Blue Note Hancock zone), to the title track, on which Jaswon's lightly reverbed sax shares a pensive duet with Moore's piano. A highly promising start to a recording career from a group that are also good value live.
