With all of modern music's effects-laden trickery and hype-laden disappointment, it sometimes takes a legend to remind us how it's done. Here, then, is Joyce Moreno, one of the greatest musical treasures in Brazil, shrugging off the help of a backing band – even one featuring her husband, drummer and collaborator Tutty Moreno – delivering classic songs with the aid of just a guitar and her gorgeous emotive voice. Oh, and the iconic setting of Ipanema Beach, to where Joyce (pronounced Joy-say) was invited to perform a stripped down show on the shoreline, before a crowd of local aficionados (some of whom had seen her when she started out 40 years earlier); before the sea, the mountain and the setting sun. Fifteen jazz and samba tunes by the likes of Tom Jobim, Caetano Veloso and Joyce herself (the album closes with her shimmering ‘Tardes Cariocas’) are accompanied by an almost palpable affection from those there on the sand. The Rio anthem ‘Cidade Maravillosa’ becomes a giant sing-a-long – a sort of love letter to the city, and to the woman singing the song.
