From the dream-like, minimalist album opener ‘When The Sun Goes In’ which gently ushers you into a sound-world bathed in reverb and hints of electronica, Love Letters and Other Missiles is an album that slowly drip-feeds into your consciousness. The wide stylistic reference points run the gamut from the soulful ‘Playing You’ to the tender lyricism of ‘Fallen’, with elements of 1960s psychedelia threading their way through songs such as ‘Little Girl’ and ‘You Do My Head In’. Fantastic string arrangements feature on four of the songs, yet somehow seem to permeate the fabric of the album as a whole, with the ghostly sustained lines of ‘We Watch The Stars’ showcasing the subtlety and imagination of the album's arrangements. Characterised by a raw emotional power and timbral richness, Biel's voice is exceptionally beautiful throughout. The brilliant supporting cast includes multi-instrumentalist (and co-producer) Idris Rahman, bassist Jasper Høiby and drummer Sebastian Rochford, all of whom are completely attuned to Biel's omnivorous tastes. An unequivocal triumph.
