Recorded live in Cafe OTO, this meeting between Julie Tippetts and Mark Wastell is released on a new imprint of Wastell's Confront label devoted to encounters with notable improvisers of earlier generations. Your tenner gets you just over 30 minutes' of music; but this improvisation is packed with detail and event and no one is likely to find themselves short-changed. The musicians surround themselves with percussion instruments associated with various Eastern cultures and the intrigue, partly, is hearing them patch together music that aspires to the dimensions of an ensemble. True enough, some of their rustlings and shakings feel plucked off the world music peg, but such moments are more than offset by Tippetts' vocal pyrotechnics which begin by snatching abstract melodic contours out of the air and head towards exquisitely controlled harmonic overtones. Wastell is forever the responsive listener. Grand tam-tam splashes are unleashed tastefully then smudged inside unfolding textures paced sensitively and always supportive of Tippetts' voice.
