Young Kauflin has attracted attention due to his association with his mentor, the late Clark Terry, documented in the film Keep On Keepin' On, and by the endorsement of Quincy Jones, named here as the executive producer. Much is made of Kauflin's blindness but we're here to judge his status as a jazz soloist, and it's pleasing to note that this album, his second, is quite excellent, mixing trio tracks with others by the quartet with Stevens. The album title says it all, for seven of the dozen Kauflin compositions are dedicated to key figures or aspects of his life that he feels to be significant. Thus the trio version of ‘For Clark’ is both moving and quietly lyrical as is ‘The Professor’ for the late Mulgrew Miller, another who encouraged Kauflin while his teacher at William Patterson University. There's also a three-part suite inspired by Kauflin's deep Catholic faith. All this given, it's Kauflin's considerable technique and sheer keyboard pizazz that impresses, the harmonic language influenced by Bill Evans and the improvisatory eloquence often recalling Keith Jarrett. No matter, for this young man has created an album of genuine worth replete with pleasurable responses from Stevens and the rhythm team. Thoughtful, eloquent music.
