The first time Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler, Swedish bassist Petter Eldh and German drummer Christian Lillinger met was on the stage of Amsterdam's Bimhuis in October 2016. By all accounts it was a meeting of minds, something rare in such casual encounters. Subsequently they have developed into what must be one of Europe's most absorbing inside/outside combinations. Their music combines grand gesture and intricate detail, attention to melody contrasted by the power of dissonance. Such disjunctions are handled with almost compositional clarity, while their repertoire, especially ‘Punk Torso’, ‘Azan’ and ‘Veins’, is edgy yet engaging in the management of their deconstructive impulses Some pieces are pre-arranged while others spontaneously conceived, yet neither approach sacrifices that ensemble's collective identity which maintains a quaint but compelling formality of approach to their material; nothing is rushed, nothing dissolves into empty rhetoric and nothing they play is gratuitous or trivial. It's music remarkable for its clarity of vision, the product of three musical minds tuned to the same creative wavelength.
