Produced by renowned Detroit jazz drummer turned hip-hop producer Karriem Riggins, Indigo is 29-yearold Kandace Springs' follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2016 debut, Soul Eyes. Taking her inspiration from Nina Simone, the album casts a noticeably wider stylistic net than the debut, blurring the lines between jazz, hip hop and alt.pop. The album's lead single and scenesetting opener, ‘Don't Need The Real Thing’, is simplicity itself, powered by a hypnotic, minimalist dancehall groove over which Springs' dreamy Fender Rhodes and stirring vocals float tenderly. Other highlights include classy reworkings of The Stylistics' ‘People Make The World Go ‘Round’ and Gabriel Garzón-Montano's ‘Six Eight’; an affecting duet, ‘Simple Things’, with her father Scat Springs; the earworminducing ‘Piece of Me’ co-written with production duo and longtime collaborators Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken (which sounds for all the world like a lost Sade song); plus a captivating version of Ewan McColl's ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’, which has long been a crowdpleaser at Springs' live shows.
