After the Singing Detective comes a Singing Psychotherapist. By day, Kate Daniels walks the mean consulting rooms of north London's Tavistock Clinic as a family therapist; by night, she turns into a chanteuse who keeps pretty fast company, as evidenced by her accompanists on this, her debut album. In truth, there's no split personality here – she navigates a programme of wellchosen standards thoughtfully, as if seeking to uncover the life-stories in them; and her singing leans more heavily on wisdom than bravado. A particular success is a trio version of ‘A Night In Tunisia’ that comes and goes like a flashback in a film noir, and is illuminated by a killer guitar solo by Etheridge.
