This is the fourth album from Kate Williams, daughter of a classical-pianist mother and guitar-virtuoso father (John Williams), and her first for such a large ensemble. Williams has previously won the John Dankworth Award for Talent Deserving Wider Recognition – a prize she clearly merited judging by this insinuatingly unshowy disc, which quietly and unself-regardingly shows off her skills as composer and leader, as well as as an undemonstratively engagingly pianist. The only non-original is a thoughtful cover of Eliane Elias’s ‘One Side of You’, which is swiftly followed up by the vigorous samba shuffle of ‘For Eliane’. Worth seeking out.
