After her debut album Aircraft in 2015, Kathrine Windfeld went from unknown to ‘Scandinavia's New Big Band Star’ in one leap with Denmark's national press suddenly hailing a new rising star with an extraordinary talent for big-band writing. To her credit, Windfeld's feet remained firmly on terra firm a before contemplating her follow-up album two years later. Latency retains her preference for bold melodic statement rooted in antiphonal writing between brass and saxes (such as ‘Leaving Portland’) leavened with a penchant for the polytonal and inside/outside duality. She's not afraid of big bold, if thoughtful, statements – ‘Double Fleisch’ and ‘Wasp’ – while the title-track reveals well-drilled ensemble cohesion and carefully articulated sforzandos in both brass and reed sections that bring her writing alive – details like this matter. ‘Elak’ and ‘Roadmovie’ are well-conceived ballad performances that perhaps ask more searching questions of her compositional and arranging skills, suggesting the best is yet to come from this new talent.
