Originally released as a part of At The Blue Note, an expensive 6CD box set released in 1995 that went on to top the Album of the Year category in the Downbeat Readers' Poll, this single set from the night of 4 June, 1994 displays all the characteristics that made this trio, for many, the preeminent group in jazz. From the opening track, ‘Autumn Leaves’, Jarrett sounds inspired; he is the eternal storyteller who cannot stop spinning yarns. The chords may be familiar but the tales he tells are fresh and new, improvising with both melody and harmony to achieve his ends. ‘Days of Wine and Roses’, from Henry Mancini's soundtrack of the film of the same name, is similarly swept up and refashioned by Jarrett's creative muse. There's also two Jarrett originals, ‘Bop-Be’ and ‘Muezzin’, before heading back to the standards where the pianist excels – ‘You Don't Know What Love Is’ and “When I Fall In Love’. This was a night when the audience got their money's worth, a dazzling evening at the highest level of creative music-making. It makes you start thinking about investing in the box set, and have done with it.
