Posi-Tone producer and label co-owner Marc Free seems to be a very loyal guy. He’s got some artistes – mainly California-based, where the label is located – with whom he’s worked for a decade or more, who are barely known outside their neck of the woods, and certainly not in the UK. Most are Coast players, who generally record with others of their kind. An exception is tenor player Ken Fowser, who lives in New York but was born in Philadelphia. For his Brooklyn studio date (his eighth for Posi-Tone), Free brought in a solid line-up of NYC sessioneers, all of whom you should be familiar with and who have their own albums on Posi-Tone (with the exception of outstanding drummer, the late Roy Hargrove Quintet man, Willie Jones III, who has his own label). There are 10 originals, all by Fowser, at least four of which are 12-bars, but all with a strong blues feeling, with the leader’s tenor setting the mood. Charette continues to impress on organ.
