Terrie Ex – guitarist with Dutch anarcho punk originators The Ex – has harboured an abiding fascination with improvisation that's seen him strike up longstanding and fruitful working relationships with pioneering free player Han Bennink among others. He's worked extensively with Chicagoan powerhouse saxophonist Ken Vandermark, in the quartet Lean Left with fellow The Ex guitarist Andy Moor and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love -and, here, Ex and Vandermark drop down to a duo to explore the same stop-start dynamics that power that group. Ex is renowned for approaching the guitar from a stubbornly non-virtuosic angle, eschewing conventional technique in favour of intuitive noise-making possibilities – attacking the neck with a drum stick, radically detuning the strings and so on. It's a style that produces a ragged repertoire of sounds, from Geiger counter click to rasping scrape and high-tensile scrabbling, from elastic boing to a dry Triffid rattle. They're all on display here, with Vandermark chucking in gnarled and twisted bursts of tenor and liquid clarinet loops. There's a barely muzzled aggression and boyish joie-de-vivre to the whole shebang that makes it quite a ride.
