Scott's 2015 debut We Are The Drum served notice of his ability as a composer-bandleader even though he had already proved his worth behind the kit with the likes of A-listers such as Terence Blanchard. This new set picks up where he left off insofar as the material has a very wide range of influences that acknowledge both modernity and tradition in black music. If there is one trademark it is a form of ambient-ish balladry where Scott sometimes creates a subtle metronomic surge with his kick drum but reins in the energy to conjure up a fraught, plaintive atmosphere Mike Moreno's piercing guitar and John Ellis' yearning bass clarinet are effective colours on this canvas, well enhanced by the integration of electronic soundscapes and speech samples. With Derrick Hodge in the producer's chair it is no surprise that there is a mild Glasper/Experiment slant to much of the material, which has been conceived, as the title suggests, as a statement of unity in divisive times. The set lacks that one killer tune, and more variation in tempo would have been welcome too. Yet it can also be enjoyed as a series of vivid mood pieces and well-constructed interludes.
