This follows hot on the heels of a London appearance by the trio, and the reissue of Barron’s early At The Piano (see Jazzwise 204). Among his several engaging originals here is the reprise of a highlight from that 1981 album, ‘Bud-Like’, whose Powell-inspired (specifically, ‘Un Poco Loco’ inspired) challenge is tackled with perhaps marginally less digital precision than 35 years ago, but even more verve – thanks to Kitagawa and especially Blake, known from the Mingus Big Band and other ventures. Barron doesn’t have quite the ferocious attack that Powell was capable of, but he has the ability to turn a basically bebop phraseology to very melodic ends, even at high speed. As often with this pianist, there are a couple of less familiar Monk tunes, ‘Shuffle Boil’ becoming more funky while ‘Light Blue’ is an unaccompanied stride version preceded by an out-of-tempo section. A surprise is the closing ‘Nightfall’ by Charlie Haden, which the bassist recorded with Barron and with Gonzalo Rubalcaba and John Taylor, and, despite its strong resemblance to ‘Turn Out The Stars’, it’s highly affecting.
