Kenny Burrell reissues are now appearing thick and fast, which is no bad thing but caution is advised with these two sessions, which are of variable quality. The first, a very collectable item originally issued on Blue Note, marked Burrell's debut as leader. By then he had already recorded with such eminences as Dizzy Gillespie and was good and ready for his big chance. Check out his poise at high speed on ‘This Time the Dream's on Me’, a tune immortalised by Charlie Parker, or the funky ‘Takeela’, a preview of his future blues-with-conga classics such as ‘Chitlins Con Carne’ or ‘Midnight Blue’. Unfortunately the second album, Weaver of Dreams, pales by comparison. It's a collection of short tracks featuring Kenny's pleasant but rather bland singing voice, which if anything has come to sound warmer in the autumn of his career than in his callow youth. So value-wise I'd say three stars for album one and one for album two, yielding an average score of two for the pair.
