Werner's virtuosity seemingly knows no bounds, especially in terms of rhythmic experimentation. That's hardly the right word, though, for he and his regular American-based accompanists are so sure-footed that, however complex the demands of the leader, their response is immediate. This shows particularly in the treatment accorded to the two jazz standards among these seven tracks, Brubeck's ‘In Your Own Sweet Way’ and Coltrane's ‘26-2’. You'd almost think the latter title was a time-signature, given the amount of metric modulation, not only in the theme statements but within the improvs. The one pop standard, ‘Try To Remember’, is taken for a more leisurely and more lyrical ride, as is Werner's own previously recorded tune ‘Balloons’. And, for some unexplained reason, the seemingly static closing tune ‘Beauty Secrets’ morphs more than halfway through into the B-section of ‘Greensleeves’, as a backing to Hoenig's expansive drum solo. All in all, a challenging and absorbing set.
