Sometimes something quintessential comes one's way as a reviewer. So what makes this so very, very good? Take two soloists playing to the best of their own exacting standards and an accompanying trio that knows its own worth. And one more thing: the planets must be in perfect alignment. These six tracks were made on three such nights. Kenny's on amazing form on his own ‘A Simple Toon’ and Duke's ‘Come Sunday’ – that's worth the entry price on its own. Skid storms through ‘K and A Blues’, while ‘Would Jubilee Vit’ recalls the more sombre, elegiac side to the master Coltrane. And let's be clear, the Jazz Live Trio are no junior partners here. Then put Skid and Wheeler together on the final two cuts and we're back at their summit meeting on Skidmore's first album, Once Upon A Time. ‘Red Daffodil’ proceeds at a stately pace with an almost Spanish tinge and then it's cry havoc and let loose the dogs on ‘Ruby Doo’. Someone's got the pacing just right here and you're left with a record that defines the art. Those planets, man.
