It doesn't seem that long a wait, but this collection of original material is a most welcome companion to the 2007-recorded Nineteen Plus One, in which Wheeler fashioned thoughtful arrangements of American songbook classics. That was done with an Italian band but the only hold-over, namely the excellent Diana Torto in a wordless Norma Winstone role, creates a sense of continuity with the earlier album. Wheeler, of course, is his own hold-over, in terms of his masterly handling of the instrumentation and utterly individual sound, both with the pen and the controlled fragility of his playing. There's also frequent solo input from such as Taylor, Sulzmann and (less frequently heard these days) Warleigh, but it's the imprint of the leader himself that makes this music so special. The result is so rich that it's almost necessary to absorb each track separately, rather than playing the entire programme straight through. Anyone who shares a love of Wheeler's melodic approach, and his writing for ensembles, will fall over themselves to get a copy of this album.
