Featuring arrangements of poems by Stevie Smith, Lewis Carroll and WB Yeats, the 11-movement Mirrors suite represents a completely new departure for the great performer and composer, Kenny Wheeler. Uniquely, the words came first. From the very opening bars of Carroll's ‘Humpty Dumpty’, you're swept along by one gorgeous melody after another, beautifully sung by Norma Winstone and the terrific, 24-strong London Vocal Project conducted by Pete Churchill. The maestro himself solos with soaring eloquence throughout, nowhere better than ‘Broken Heart’, as does the terrific supporting cast of pianist Nikki Iles and saxophonist Mark Lockheart. The bass and drum team of Steve Watts and James Maddren allow the music all the space and air it needs to take flight. The scope of Wheeler's writing is phenomenal, from the almost conversational ‘Black March’ to the slyly humorous ‘Tweedledum’, while the overwhelming sense of lyrical sweep that underpins ‘Breughel’ melts the heart. Even by Wheeler's exacting standards, Mirrors is one of the finest works to have flowed from his pen and another spectacular addition to Edition's catalogue.
