Ketil Bjørnstadt is more than a pianist, he is a bold, and, as the passage of time has demonstrated, inexhaustible conceptualist. His music is never a thing-in-itself or about itself, but is both impressionistic and programmatic in content whose subject matter is drawn from the pianist’s memories of, dreams about and reflections on things, experiences and events. Most of his recordings have been done as a soloist, in a duo or in a trio but occasionally he uses a slightly larger ensemble – as he did in his highly personal and moving response to the poetry of John Donne in 2001’s Grace – to telling effect. Bjørnstadt likes working with a cello, as his collaborations with David Darling attest, and together with Sheppard’s saxophones, provide compelling leading voices for this reflection on the cinematic imagery of Italian filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni. Recorded live at the Molde Jazz Festival in 2010, this is an album of depth that can be returned to again and again, and each time you can expect it to yield a little more of its meaning.
