This is one of those ideas that's so good that you wonder why nobody's attempted it before: get a group of contemporary Brit-jazzers to cover classic British compositions and put them out as collectable 7-inch singles.
Kudos then, to Jon Griffiths of enterprising South London indie reissue specialist My Only Desire for doing it. His new Brit Jazz 45s series kicks off with saxophonist/composer Kevin Figes and his group You Are Here creating a homage to two inspirational UK musicians – Keith Tippett and Elton Dean – with new recordings of a classic track from each.
Figes worked with Tippett and his, and his group's, admiration for the great man shines through on this irrepressible version of ‘Green and Orange Night Park’; the interpretation of Dean's ‘Seven For Lee’ is just as good, with a great South African vibe.
The packaging of the single is splendid, and Caspar Sutton-Jones at Gearbox has provided a meaty-sounding, crystal clear vinyl cut. Soft Machine, Ruby Rushton and Beats & Pieces Big Band have all been lined up for future releases, meaning that this is a series well worth following.
